FROM US TO YOU!!!

Each year on February 14th, many people celebrate a day called Valentine's Day. It's a day to exchange cards, candy, gifts or flowers with their special “valentine.” Today we got to celebrate this special day with 23 of our friends. Who needs one valentine when you can have 23??? Lucky us!!!

Our afternoon was spent playing games, have a Valentine's snack, testing out our skills during minute to win it games and the best part: opening Valentine's from 23 of our greatest friends (we even got to eat a few...SO much sugar!!!)! The sound of joy, laughter, and "thank you's" filled the air. The kids had a blast and so did I!

Today we wish you a "Happy Valentine's Day and hope that your day was as great as ours!

Be KIND

February is all about kindness at Century Elementary.

As much as we should show kindness daily, it is our goal this month do be EXTRA kind to others and ourselves. Miss Weeding challenged the students in class to do at least one kind thing a day for someone. At the end of each day, we talk about the kind things we did and how those things made someone else feel. We've heard things such as: I walked a kid who was hurt to the nurse, I gave someone a compliment, I sat by a new friend at lunch, I invited a new friend to play with me at lunch.... ahhhhh. Heart melters.

KINDNESS week will start on Feb. 13th!  We will celebrate with the following days:

Monday:  Encourage your students to be kind by playing with someone new on the playground!
Tuesday:  Wear RED; PINK or PURPLE to celebrate Valentine's Day!
Wednesday:  Encourage KIND words today and always! Put an act of kindness into action.
Thursday:  Rainbow Color Day!  Be Bright!  Be KIND!  Wear your favorite color to school!
Friday:  Wear BE KIND shirts!

Happy Kindness month. Spread kindness, love and smiles to others!!!

Hooray for the 100th Day!!!!

100 DAYS OF SCHOOL?!?! WHAT?? ALREADY??

We've made it! Today marked the 100th day of school and I must say, every single one of those 100 days has been wonderful!!!!!

To keep tradition going...it's a special day...and on special days we celebrate....so today, we did just that.

Welcome to Room 104. Miss Weeding's First Grade Classroom. Where every day is a day of learning and fun. Come on in (the kids had to crawl in this morning)!!!

A fun fact: we LOVE to dress up. So, dress up we will. Prepare to see some of the CUTEST 100 year old ladies and gentlemen this side of the first grade pod.

 Can they get much cuter?????

To kick off our morning we started our calendar by singing and counting to 100 by 1's, 5's and 10's. Because Miss Weeding has such a wonderful voice (HA!), she also likes to sing. A lot. So singing we must do.

We created an art project. Made 100 Days Brighter crowns. Wrote our "Bucket Lists" for what we want to do before we are 100. And talked about all we've learned so far this year and how very, very hard we've worked.

We made a 100 day snack with items that each student brought in. Yum! We did some 100 day math stations, had a cup stacking contest with 100 cups, made structures with 100 building blocks, AND at the end of the day.... we got our CERTIFICATES for 100 days of learning! WOW!
I am going to have a proud teacher moment.....
These kids have worked SO incredibly hard this year and have come such a long ways since the first day of school. They have so much to be proud of and so do YOU as parents, family members, friends, etc. This is a team effort and I have to thank families for all of the support they give their child at home. I am beyond lucky to be your child's teacher and I count my blessings each and every day.

Happy 100th day! Ask your child their peek of the day today! There were lots!

Solid Figures...3D Shapes are EVERYWHERE!

3D Shapes

3D shapes are fat not flat.
A cone is like a party hat.
A sphere is like a bouncy ball.
A prism is like a building tall.
A cylinder is like a can of pop.
A cube is like the dice you drop.
3D shapes are here and there.
3D shapes are everywhere!

Sing that song a few times and it'll be stuck in your head for days!!! At least that is what happened to us!

Last week we started discussing solid and plane figures. What better way to review what we've learned than involving some food...because who doesn't like food?!? :)

Today we used bugles, captain crunch, snickers, kit kat's, mike and ike's and hershey kisses to review our spheres, cones, cubes, rectangular prisms, cylinders and pyramids.

We sorted our solid foods into different piles based on their shape, we graphed our solid foods and determined which one we had the most of and the least of. The best part then was.....WE GOT TO EAT THEM! YUM!

We LOVE that learning can be so much fun!

It's great practice for the students to go on a solid shape hunt around your home and look for items that are solid figures. And they LOVE any reason to go on a scavenger hunt!!! Happy 3D shape hunting! :)
