Today, Monday, January 16th we celebrate
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
Today, our students learn about how one person had a dream that everyone would be treated equally no matter what the color of their skin was.
"I look to a day when people will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character."
What an important lesson that not only our children are reminded of, but that adults are reminded of too.
We did an experiment this morning with two eggs. Yes, eggs. We looked at the outside of two eggs and talked about how to compare and contrast them. We observed that one egg was white and one egg was brown. They were basically the same shape and they were both eggs, but on the outside they did look different.
We predicted what the inside might look like if the outside was different. Then, Miss Weeding did something CRAZY...she cracked the eggs open!!! What we saw amazed us.
Even though one egg was brown and one egg was white, they looked EXACTLY the same on the inside. How cool is that?!? We talked about how people are exactly the same as these eggs. No matter what we might look like on the outside, our insides are all the same. It's really our character that makes all the difference.
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was a brave man who did truly remarkable things for our nation. Here are some words that we came up with as a class to describe him:
If you have a minute, watch the Kid President video below. We couldn't have said it better ourselves...

Today, we thank Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. that many years ago he thought to himself, things should be better. And he did something about it. Isn't it cool that we can change things?!
Today, our students reflected back on this important part of history and came up with their very own dream because they too can change things.
"I have a dream..."
WOW! Keep dreaming, first graders!
Never stop hoping for a better tomorrow.
I have a dream.....
I have a dream that as my students continue their journey in life, they ALWAYS remember that it doesn't matter what's on the outside...it's what's on the inside that truly matters.
Today I ask that you go spread the love and ask yourself "What is my dream?"
